Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans are a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide all your Part A and Part B benefits. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage.

Types of Plans:

  1. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans
  2. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans
  3. Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans
  4. Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans (or Medigap) are an additional plan that helps to fill “gaps” in original Medicare plan coverage. Medicare Supplement Plans can help pay remaining healthcare costs such as:

  1. Copays
  2. Coinsurance
  3. Deductibles

A few things to know about Medicare Supplement Plans:

  1. You must have Medicare Part A & Part B
  2. It only supplements original Medicare benefits
  3. An additional monthly premium is paid for coverage
  4. Each policy covers one person

Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Plans

A Prescription Drug Plan is an optional benefit offered to anyone with Original Medicare. Prescription drug coverage, which subsidizes the costs of prescription drugs for enrollees, is a stand-alone plan, covering only prescription drugs.  Prescription Drug Plans can vary in coverage based on the list of drugs they cover (also called the formulary) and the “tiers” prescription drugs are placed in.  Enrollment in a Prescription Drug Plan is not required, but a delay in enrolling could result in financial penalties.

You may want to consider enrolling in a Prescription Drug Plan if:

  • You take a specific medication
  • If you want extra protection from high costs
  • You take a lot of generic prescriptions
